Esk Street Streetscape Upgrade

A complex street upgrade that involved infrastructure renewal, working around existing traffic patterns and ongoing retail businesses to create better community meeting spaces. Pedestrian focused space was created by moving the center alignment of the street off center creating a wider space for community amenity on the sunny side of the street. The design incorporated street furniture, street trees, a water feature, amenity gardens, shelter and a programed lighting design that reflected the unique quality of the southern lights, "aurora borealis" that can be seen from Invercargill.
