Nelson City Heart Revitalization Plan
The Nelson CBD generally had a healthy business and retail corridor lining the main street. however several new developments had been located one block off the main street that where disconnected and added little to the community experience of the CBD. The main street also had a vehicle and parking focus and generally lack pedestrian amenity. Finally the Nelson CBD was disconnected from the Maitai river the flowed through the city centre and to the high quality coastal environment beyond for which the Nelson region is known for.
The CBD revitalization plan focused on creating higher pedestrian and community amenity within the city centre, creating stronger links to the developments off the main street as well as linking the river and coastal areas to the CBD for the community to enjoy. Some of the initiatives Craig Pocock lead as part of a wider team included the planning and design testing the urban environment connection to business, the river corridor and the coastal environment including a path and art corridor along the Maitai river, protection of significant landscape and historical view shafts and the creation of ecological connections from the surrounding hills, through the CBD to the coastal edge. . |
