Whanganui CBD Revitalization
The Whanganui CBD revitalization project looked at the downtown area and the main street of Whanagui to see how design and planning initiatives could create a safe vibrant environment that would draw both the community and business back to the CBD. Unique aspects of the Whanganui CBD such as the access to the Whanagui River, historical buildings, the Ucol campus, a historical tram route, the art and museum precinct, elevated views and associated opens spaces could be used to improve the amenity of the CBD and hence increase it usabilty for the community.
Some of the key initiatives were to create stronger connections from the city heart to the Whanganui River and historical open spaces and gentle editing of existing public spaces to improve their usability without using a "pull it up and start" again approach. One innovative initiative was focused on connecting the Whanganui River as an ecological corridor to the city parks that occupied the high ground across the city which act as ecological islands with the aim to create an ecologically connected region. |
